2017 Gyp Hills Hike

2017 Gyp Hills Hike, October 28th!

The hike will take place on the Kirkbride family ranch, which is located southwest of Medicine Lodge.

We will meet at the ranch house at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, October 28th. My wife & I will provide lunch for all hikers. After lunch, we will start the hike, which will last about four or five hours. We usually hike between five and eight miles. The level of difficulty is moderate. The terrain in the Gyp Hills is rugged in places, but we will travel slowly in those locations. On previous hikes, we had have had hikers of all ages, with several in their 80s! We always have a great group of individuals.

There is no charge for the lunch, but we do request a voluntary contribution of $5.00 to support future Sierra Club outings and programs. The Sierra Club also requires all hikers to sign waivers in order to protect the Club. I have been leading the Gyp Hills Hike for the last 14 years, and so far have never had an injury. I am a Sierra Club certified outings leader and maintain Red Cross certification in CPR and first aid. I have also been trained in wilderness first aid.

We recommend that all hikers wear clothing appropriate for the weather conditions on the day of the hike as well as sturdy shoes. Also, in case the ticks are not dead by the 28th, I recommend insect repellant. Hiking sticks and trekking poles are optional. Bring enough water for a five-hour hike. Many hikers bring trail mix as well. Pursuant to Sierra Club rules, firearms are not allowed.

To register for the hike, call 316-945-0728 and leave an email address or send an email to david.kirkbride@kansas.sierraclub.org. I will send specific directions to the ranch to all who register.

If you have questions, just let me know.

I look forward to hiking with you on the 28th.
