The Kansas Chapter of the Sierra Club is offering a limited number of grants to K-12 teachers in accredited Kansas schools who undertake projects, activities, and lessons to enhance student understanding of climate change. Grants may be used to attend conferences, prepare special lessons and experiments, and/or purchase materials needed for lessons and projects on climate change. Licensed K-12 teachers in Kansas school districts in any field of study may apply.
Think of the possibilities! Perhaps an art teacher needs materials for a contest and special display of student art, or a science teacher would like to plan a field trip, or a history teacher wants to attend a conference on environmental history.
These grants are intended to enhance teachers’ abilities to educate students on the nature of climate change and to illustrate by experiment or demonstration how human activity accelerates climate change. Further, through these projects teachers and students should be able to suggest solutions to slow the process of climate change.
Grants will range from $250 to $1,000. The deadline for applications is April 30, 2013, by postmark or email timestamp. Awards will be announced in mid-June. Grant recipients will agree to present their projects or activities at a regular Sierra Club General Meeting of one of the five Sierra Club Groups in Kansas during the 2013-14 academic year. Sierra Club General Meetings are open both to members and the general public.
It is our hope to partner with teachers throughout Kansas in educating students about the nature and causes of our changing climate, and so to contribute to their success in addressing this vital issue.
