Interests from Outside Kansas Oppose Holcomb
1. Attorney Generals of Six Northeastern States, Wisconsin and California Oppose Holcomb Coal Plant Expansion (12-15-06)
The AG's of eight states submitted comments to KDHE requesting that the permit for the Holcomb coal plant expansion be denied. They noted that the 15 to 16 million tons/year of carbon dioxide that the Holcomb complex will emit will wipe out the gains these states anticipate from their programs to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. They note also that Sunflower did not properly assess alternative technologies to produce electricity. Click here for their full comment.
2. Colorado Report Says Holcomb Power Not needed, Too Expensive (12-12-06)
Western Resource Advocates has issued a report stating that Tri-State Generation and Transmission Assn, owner of two of the three 700 MW coal plants proposed at Holcomb, Ks, does not need this power to meet the electricity demand of its member utilities. WRA also says that wholesale electricity rates, which must be paid by member utilities and their rate payers, will soar by at least 64% if these plants go ahead. See WRA press release and full report.
